Afghanistan Medal – No Clasp 1878 – 1880 to 6Bde. 769 Corpl. C. Haydon of the 1/25th Foot

Charles Haydon first appears in the Pay Musters for the 1st Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers in October 1875, when he is shown as “on board ship” – transferred to the 6th Brigade. Between January and March 1877 he is shown as being promoted to Corporal Charles Haydon. In 1878 Corpl. Haydon together with the 1/25th Foot replaced the 2nd Battalion in India when the 1st Battalion joined the Peshawar Valley Field Force to serve in the Second Afghan War occupying the Khyber Pass and Fort Jamrud.

In January 1879, Corpl. Haydon and his regiment took part in the attack and destruction of several fortified villages of the Zakka Khels in the Bazar Valley. During this action the 1/25th Regt. lost 1 man killed and 4 wounded.

Later, in 1880 the 1/25th Regiment joined the Kabul Field Force and after a night march carried out a successful attack on enemy positions near Fort Dakka losing another man killed during the action. Following this the 1/25th was based at Fort Pezwan until the end of the war.

The Regiment was to stay in India until 1889. However, Corpl. Charles Haydon was transferred back to the U.K. on 08.11.1882.
