WWI War and Victory Pair to 205144 Pte. W. L. Cross of the Norfolk Regiment K.I.A. 16/07/1917    SOLD

William Larkin Cross initially joined the 7th Battalion Norfolk Regiment with the service number 205144 in late 1915. He was later transferred to the 9th Battalion retaining the same service number.

The 9th Battalion was stationed in France and was part of the 71st Brigade of the 6th Division. Pte. William Larkin Cross first saw action on the Somme in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15th September 1916 where the 9th Norfolk was accompanied by one tank. The 9th attacked Straight Trench where it was halted by severe machine gunfire. Pte. Cross was later involved in the Somme Battles of Morval on 25th September and Le Transloy on 1st October 1916.

In 1917, the 9th Battalion was mainly involved in French raids and it was during one such British attack that Pte. William Larkin Cross was killed in action on 16th July 1917.

205144 Pte. William Larkin Cross is Remembered with Honour on the Arras Memorial.

This is a very desirable medal pair to a member of the 9th Norfolks who was involved in a very early British tank action. The medal pair is sold with copies of M.I.C., British War and Victory medal list, and C.W.G.C. memorial sheets.
