Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899 – 3 Clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg to 3209 Sergeant G. Shaw 7th Dragoon Guards

Sergeant G. Shaw sailed to South Africa on the Armenian on 8th February 1900 together with 24 officers and 500 other ranks. On arrival, the 7th Dragoon Guards were placed in the 4th Cavalry Brigade under Brigadier General Dickson.

Sergt. Shaw first saw action at Thabanchu in April and later at Haut Nek on the 1st May. Following this, the 7th Dragoon Guards held Waterval Post north of Pretoria, where they were heavily attacked by the Boers on 11th July, 1900. They successfully held their position whilst sustaining many casualties, including 4 killed.

Altogether, the 7th Dragoon Guards sustained fairly heavy casualties for a cavalry regiment, which amounted to 24 killed and 65 wounded.
