Indian General Service medal 1895, 2 Clasps Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 to 3610 Pte. C. Lynn 2nd Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Condition – N.E.F.
On the 1st October 1890, the 2nd K.O.Y.L.I., based in India, joined the reserve brigade of the Tirah Field Forces. The reserve brigade, consisting of 17 officers and 620 other ranks, travelled to Rawalpindi. The 2nd K.O.Y.L.I. remained here until late January 1891, when 400 men joined the Mamanai Column that attacked the Afridis in the Shinkamar Pass on the 29th January. The 2nd Battalion K.O.Y.L.I. was successful in this attack, but sustained very heavy casualties during their retirement along the pass. The Afridis fired on the troops from the heights along both sides of the pass, and the 2nd Battalion K.O.Y.L.I. sustained 30 killed and 64 wounded.
Following this, the 2nd Battalion was mainly involved in road building, and escort, and picquet duty in the Bera Valley until the end of the war in April 1898, when they returned to India.
A very good quality medal to a regiment that sustained heavy casualties in the North West Frontier.
