Description

9th Century Anglo-Saxon  Zoomorphic Bronze Strap End

This Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic strap end is of the animal head variety, the terminal of the strap end consisting of the snout, eyes, and comma-shaped ears, typical of finds from Northern England. The central design within a panel depicts a quadruped with its head turned backward. It is unusual, in that the background of the panel still retains about 60% of light green enameling. Behind the panel, there is a fan-shaped design leading to the two securing holes.

On the reverse of the strap end, the section incorporating the securing holes is missing, which probably explains how the strap end was lost.
The strap end is a most attractive piece of outstanding Saxon workmanship. It measures 35 mm in length and 12 mm at its widest and is in very good condition.
