WWI War and Victory Pair to 27223 Pte. W. Byford of the Warwickshire Regiment K.I.A. 14.01.1917

Walter Byford was born and resided in the village of Claire, Suffolk. He initially joined the Suffolk Regiment, but was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Warwickshire Regiment and received the service number 27223. As a part of the 22nd Brigade of the 7th Division Pte. Byford first saw action with the 2nd Battalion Warwicks on the Somme during the capture of Mametz, the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, and the Battle of High Wood in July 1916. Later, he took part in the Battle of Guillemont in September 1916.

The 2nd Battalion Warwickshire Regiment was also involved in the operations on the Ancre on 11th January 1917. Walter Byford was unfortunately killed in action during the heavy engagement of 14th January 1917. He is Remembered with Honour on the Thiepval Memorial.

The medal pair is sold with copies of M.I.C., C.W.G.C. and Soldiers Died in the Great War sheets.
