WWI War and Victory Pair to 44803 Pte. J. Handley of the Manchester Regiment K.I.A. 28/03/1918

John Handley was born in Ripon, Yorkshire, and enlisted with the Manchester Regiment. He was placed in the 9th Battalion which was to join the 198th Brigade of the 66th Division. Pte. Handley’s first engagement with the 9th Battalion Manchester Regiment was in the attack on Passchendaele Village on the 9th October 1917, (Third battle of Ypres), during which heavy casualties were sustained.

Following this Pte. Handley was to see action during the Great German March Offensive of 1918. Unfortunately, during Major Von Johnson’s thrust with the German Guard’s Division near Marcourt on the 28th March 1918, Pte. Handley was killed in action.

Pte. J. Handley is remembered with honour on the Pozieres Memorial.

The medal pair is sold with copies of MIC and C.W.G.C. papers.
