WWI War and Victory Pair to 6490 Pte. A. Campbell of the 4- London Regiment K.I.A. 24/03/1918

Alexander Murdoch Campbell resided in Motherwell before joining the 4th Battalion London Regiment in June 1916. The 4th-London was allocated to the 168th Brigade of the 56th (London) Division. Pte. Campbell’s first action was on the Somme on 7th October 1916 at Transloy Ridge during the Battle of Ancre Heights.

In 1917, the 1/4 London took part in the Battle of Langemark, 16th to 18th August, and Cambrai, November 1917. By January 1918, Pte. Campbell had become attached to the 3rd Battalion London Regiment. He was given the new number 283135 and he was promoted to Lance Corporal. The 3/London had recently joined (31/01/1918) the 173rd Brigade of the 58th Division and were based near Pozieres. On the 22nd March 1918, the Germans launched their “Great March Offensive” where 58 German Divisions attacked 16 British Divisions. On 24th March during bitter hand-to-hand fighting Pte. A. M. Campbell was killed in action aged 38. He is Remembered with Honour on the Pozieres Memorial

The medal pair is sold with copies of MIC and Soldiers Died in the Great War Casualty details, which show that Pte. Alexander Murdoch Campbell was attached to the 3/London Regiment when he was killed.
