Description
This 13th/14th-century bronze seal matrix has a conical handle that has hexagonal facets and incorporates a circular terminal. The seal has a central motif of a hare over an arrow or crossbow bolt. The inscription around the edge reads “ALAS BOWELES” which is thought to be a hunting cry.
The seal matrix was discovered in 2010 and has a PAS form.
The seal matrix measures 21 mm in length, 17 mm in diameter, and 6.8 g in weight. A small piece of the edge is missing above the W and the first E, but this does not detract from the overall good condition of the seal.
