Description

Early 1860s Sixth Plate Ruby Ambrotype of a Federal Soldier Armed with Rifle

The soldier is wearing a four buttoned sack cloth service coat and a kepi. Over his coat he is wearing a shoulder belt with roundel plate and a waist belt with buckle and ammunition pouch. The soldier has tinted cheeks and sports a goaty beard and moustache. He holds an upright rifle in his right hand showing its carrying strap.

The case is in two halves and is made of embossed brown coloured paper applied over a wooden shell. The case is decorated with a floral motif within an oval and inside the case is a red velvet pad on the left whilst the ambrotype is fitted in the right. Inside the case the ambrotype is mounted in a decorated brass protector,  has an ornate brass rim and is covered with a protective glass.

The image is very clear and the ambrotype is in very good overall condition for an early Civil War ruby ambrotype.
