WWI British War and Victory Pair to G/20546 Pte. N.A.O. Neville 7th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment K.I.A. 24/04/1918 (first German major tank attack)

Norman Alois Oram Neville was born in South Shields and resided in Newcastle-On-Tyne. He enlisted into the Royal West Kent Regiment and was placed in the 7th Battalion with the number G/20546. The 7/ Royal West Kent Regiment was part of the 55th Brigade of the 18th (Eastern) Division. Pte. Neville, as a replacement, was involved in the final attack on the Somme during the Battle of Ancre on 18th November 1916. During 1917, the 7/Royal West Kents fought in the following major battles – The Scarpe, Pilken Ridge, Langemarck, and First/Second Passchendale. On 09/02/1918, the 7th Battalion was transferred to the 53rd Brigade of the 18th Division and took part in the Battle of St. Quentin.

During the German Great March offensive 1918, the 18th Division was heavily engaged. Pte. Neville was engaged in day-to-day action throughout March and April. On 24th April 1918 during the Battle of the Lys, the Germans heavily attacked Villers-Bretonneux. This attack was notable for the first major use of German tanks. The Germans deployed 14 of their 20 A.7.Vs against the British. Pte. Norman Alois Oram Neville was killed in action at the age of 19, during the British/Australian counterattacks to retake Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 24th April. Pte. N. A. O. Neville is Remembered with Honour on the Pozieres Memorial.

This is a very desirable casualty pair to a soldier killed during the first major German tank assault of the Great War.
