James Statham was born at Catton in Norfolk. He enlisted into the Norfolk Regiment at Norwich in early 1916 and was placed in the 9th Battalion. James Statham’s next action was on the 16th October 1916 when the 9th Battalion of the Norfolks attacked and took the North-Western position of Mild Trench resulting in 248 casualties.

Following the Somme, the 9/Norfolk’s next action was at Cambrai, where the casualties on 19th November 1917 amounted to 93. During the Great German Offensive, the 9th Battalion saw severe fighting on the 21st of March 1918 and lost 364 men. On the Ypres salient on the 1st April, they were once again to suffer heavily – 456. Despite James Statham surviving all the above battles, he was to lose his life on 18th September 1918 during the 9th Battalion’s attack near St Quentin. Casualties for the 9/Norfolks on this day were 29 killed, 155 wounded, and 5 missing. Pte. James Statham is remembered with honour on the Viz-En-Artois Memorial. His war medals were awarded to his next of kin on 21/03/1921.

A desirable pair of medals to a Norfolk soldier, who saw considerable action.

The medal pair is sold with a copy of his MIC showing the change of service number to 265361 and the C.W.G.C. certificate.
