WWI War and Victory Pair to 37059 Pte. G. Crowder of the Lancashire Fusiliers K.I.A. 12.10.1916

George Crowder was born in Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire and resided in Newark. He initially enlisted in the North Staffordshire Regiment on 11th May 1916. However, a fortnight later he transferred to the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, acquiring the service number 37059. The 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers was attached to the 12th Brigade of the 4th Division.

Pte. Crowder first saw action on the Somme on 1st July, 1916 when the 2/Lancashire Fusiliers made an attack on Redan Trench during the Battle of Albert. The next engagement for the 2nd Battalion was the attack towards Le Transloy on 12th October. The whole Battalion participated in the major offensive against Zenith Trench and it was here that Pte. George Crowder was killed in action aged 34. He is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial.
