Description

WWI War and Victory Pair to 46438 Pte. R.D. West of the Highland Light Infantry W.I.A.

Condition – E.F.

Robert D. West joined the Highland Light Infantry in early 1916 and was to see his first action on the Somme at Guillmont in August 1916. Later his Regiment was to capture Martinpuich in September 1916. At some point in the war, Pte. R.D. West transferred to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers with the new service number of 42533. Whilst serving with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Pte. West was reported as wounded on the War Office Daily List no. 5176 on 07/11/2018 and was entitled to wear a “War Stripe” as authorised under Army Order 204. It is likely he was actually wounded around the end of September/early October as it took approximately a month for  casualties to be published.

It is probable that Robert D. West was also awarded the World War II Defence medal, as the War and Victory Pair were discovered in an O.H.M.S. World War II brown cardboard medal box. At this time Robert D. Watson was residing in Altringham, as the name and address given is R.D. West, Temperley, Altringham, Cheshire.

Both medals are in E.F. condition and are wrapped in tissue paper within the medal box. The medal pair also comes with a copy of the MIC document.
