Description

9th Century Bronze Saxon Zoomorphic Strap End

This 9th-century Saxon strapend has quite a complex design depicting the head of a beast. The beast’s head design incorporates extended oval ears, lozenge-shaped eyes, and a short snout. Its four main panels are inlaid with small portions of silver. Above the beast’s snout, two sunken circular eyes are evident and within the eye panels, the eyebrows are shown as inlays of silver. In the second panel, which depicts the ears, there are two more silver inlays in scrollwork (most of the silver inlay has disappeared in one panel). Both of the strap end’s eyelets remain and one still retains its fixing stud.

This is a most attractive and unusual item found in Suffolk. It measures 25 mm in length and 10 mm at its widest point.
