1914/15 Star Trio to 20746 Pte. B. Bruce of the Durham Light Infantry W.I.A.

Bert Bruce joined the 10th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry on 18th August 1914 and became a member of D company. He landed in France on 21st May 1915 and the 10th Durhams were placed in the 43rd Brigade of the 14th (Light Division). Bert Bruce first saw action south of Ypres, where the 10th Battalion suffered its first casualties. The Battalion remained in the Ypres salient throughout June and July successfully defending smashed trenches south of Hooge. By the end of July 2015, the battalion had lost 170 men killed or wounded.

During the heavy shelling of the Durham trenches early in May of 1916, Pte. Bruce was wounded by shrapnel and contracted sepsis in his left knee. From the 11th May 1916, he received hospital treatment for 26 days and was discharged from hospital 0n 6th June 1916. 

Pte. B. Bruce was discharged due to his wound on the 31st October 1916, aged 23. He was entitled to the S.W.B. and the medal group is sold with copies of the S.W.B. roll and MIC.
