Description

Early 14th Century Intricate Bronze/Gilt Buckle and Plate

This is the scarcer type of buckle with a metal roller fitted on the outside of the loop. This system would have allowed easier and tighter fastening of the belt. The loop is quite ornate and leads to a plate, which has a circular terminal. The plate is adorned with three dome-shaped rivets, which serve to secure the loop to the backplate.

The whole piece was gilded and still retains about 40% of its gold gilt colouration. The buckle is missing its metal tongue, which was probably lost in antiquity.
The buckle and plate measure 40 mm in length and 17 mm at its widest point.
