Harold Edward Brackenbury was born in Barkwith Lincolnshire and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment in Louth. He was however transferred to the 2/5th Battalion Manchester Regiment. This Battalion landed in France in February 1917, as part of the 199th (2/1st Manchester) Brigade of the 66th (2nd East Lancashire Division). Pte. Brackenbury first saw action at Messines in the opening Battle of Pilckem Ridge on 31st July 1917. Harold Edward Brackenbury was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres on 7th October 1917, during preparations for the attack on Poelcappelle. A total of 248 men were killed fighting for the 2/5th Bn. Manchesters during 1917.

Pte. Brackenbury is Remembered with Honour on the Tyne Cot Memorial. The medal pair is sold with the original Record Office slip which accompanied Pte. Brackenbury's medals. The medals are also sold with copies of the MIC (showing that the War and Victory medals were his sole entitlement), the CWGC certificate and Soldiers Died in the Great War pages.
