Wallace Ethorne Griffin joined the Devon Regiment in early 1916 and was to first see action on the Somme. However, he transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1917 and was allocated the new service number of 43883. Whilst serving with the Berkshires, Pte. Griffin saw action at Arras in 1917. It was whilst the Berkshires were giving the French forces support at the Battle of the Aisne that Pte. W.E. Griffin was killed in action on 24th June 1918 aged 19 years of age. He was interred in the Varennes Military Cemetery.
Both the War and Victory medals are named to his first regiment, the Devons. However, he was killed in action serving with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. This is shown in the copy of MIC which accompanies the medals and plaque. A copy of the C.W.G.C. is also sold with the group.
