2nd Century Gilt/Glass Brooch SOLD
This is a particularly impressive and scarce Roman 2nd century umbonate (domed) brooch. It is elliptical in shape and has a fully gilded background to a central stone setting, which consists of three raised beaded patterns leading to an outer rim. Within the centre of the brooch is a substantial black glass stone in a boss form measuring 1cm in length. The fastening pin is missing, but the condition and quality of the brooch is excellent.
The overall measurements are 2.2cm in length and 1.7cm in width.
Similar examples of this style of brooch can be seen on P126 of Benet's Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom (second edition).
