Illuminated Leaf on Vellum from a Beauvau Family Book of Hours circa 1420-40
This is an original leaf from a large size medieval manuscript, the Beauvau Book of Hours.
Each side of the leaf comprises sixteen lines of Latin text on animal vellum. Lines are ruled in red and the text is written in dark brown ink using gothic textura script, with rubrics (headings) in red.
The text incorporates illuminated two line initials and illuminated one line initials in heavily burnished gold on red and blue ground with delicate white tracery.
The leaf originates from Northern France circa 1420.
