14th Century Bronze Book Mount Engraved with a Lombardic "M"
The mount consists of a large flat, square plate with two intact securing pins for receiving a leather strap.
The plate has a lombardic "M" standing for Maria engraved on it. Attached to the plate is a lozenge shaped box with a flower design, which is hollow and has a small circular hole beneath. A bar could have been inserted into this hole making it possible to keep a book closed whilst transporting it. Below the box is a zoomorphic wolf's head terminal with a projecting loop and attached ring for suspension.
The mount is 7.5 cm in length and 3.8 cm at its widest point.
Book mounts of this type are quite scarce and this example is in very good condition.
