Pte. Mellins was ordered out to South Africa with the 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, on the 14th December 1899. The Regiment became part of General Chermside's 14th Brigade, in General Tucker's 7th Division. The King's Own Scottish Borderer's first major action was at Paardeberg, on 27th February 1900. Following this the Regiment was heavily engaged, on the 29th March, at the Battle of Karee near Brandfort, where the Boers occupied a formidable line of hills. During this engagement, British losses were 183 killed and wounded with the heaviest casualties belonging to the King's Own Scottish Borderers. The overall losses of the 1st Battalion were 52 killed and 95 wounded.
