Pte. M. Higgins was ordered out to South Africa with the 1st Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment on 14th December 1900, which formed part of General Tucker's 7th Division. The Regiment fought at Karee Siding, Zand River and Johannesburg.
At Karee Siding, the British Infantry losses amounted to 160 killed and wounded, the larger share of the casualties falling on the East Lancashire and Scottish Borderer Regiments. During the Boer War, the Regiment suffered a total loss of 20 killed and 40 wounded.
