Military General Service Medal 1799-1826 1 Clasp Java to Pte. William Green 59th Foot    SOLD

Condition - E.F.

William Green together with his Regiment the 59th Foot (2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire Regiment), joined the British Expedition to capture the Island of Java under the overall command of Sir Samuel Auchmuty. The island was held by a large number of Dutch and French troops. The 59th Foot joined the 2nd Madras Division under Colonel Gibs and disembarked at Chillingcherry on 4th August 1811. The siege of Fort Cornwallis commenced on 20th August and on 26th the Fort was carried by assault. The fighting was severe and by the end of the battle the British captured 218 officers and 6000 men. During this action the 59th Foot was in the forefront and casualties amounted to 5 officers killed, 10 wounded and 18 other ranks killed plus 128 wounded

It appears that William Green received a pension on 2nd August 1813.

Only 104 Java clasps were awarded to the 59th Foot. William Green is listed on the General Service Medal Roll as earning the single clasp for Java. This is a scarce medal to a very fine Regiment heavily involved in action during the Java Expedition.
