Corporal Pearse was engaged during the Third Burma War of 1885-87. This war took place when King Thebaw, in a display of anti-British feeling interfered with the Bombay and Burma Trading Company's timber trade. Although the king surrendered after three weeks, on 26th March 1885, the conflict continued between British/Indian troops and dacoits right up to 1891.The 2nd Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry was involved in many skirmishes with the heavily armed and numerous dacoits. Action included the engagements at Tammu in June 1886 and at the capture of the Hmawaing Stockade in March 1887.
