Pte. G. Vaughan was killed in action at Cambrai, 1917. He fought with the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment at Cambrai, during the 21st and 22nd of November 1917. However, he was killed on the 30th November during the massive German counter-attack, which resulted in losses amounting to 15 killed, 46 wounded and 31 missing.
The initials on the War medal read E.G., but the service number is the same on both medals.
