British War and Victory Pair to G1804 Pte. H. Shackleton of the Northumberland Fusiliers with Official 183rd Brigade British Expeditionary Force  Winners Football Medal

Condition - E.F.
Harry Shackleton joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in Newcastle in 1916. He was placed in the 9th (Service) Battalion, which was part of the 103rd Brigade of the 34th Division. Arriving in France in 1917, Pte. Shackleton was to see action in the Third Battle of Ypres. On 25th September, 1917 the 9th Battalion absorbed the 21st Northumberland Hussars into their ranks and became known as the 9th Northumberland Hussars Battalion.

During 1918 the 9th Battalion took part in the Battle of the Somme. On the 26th May 1918, the 9th Battalion was transferred to the 183rd Brigade, 61st (2nd South Midlands) Division and took part in the final advance in Picardy.

Harry Shackleton fortunately survived the Great War battles of 1917 and 1918 and as a member of the British Army Occupation Force in Germany, he participated in the 183rd Brigade inter platoon football competition, which the 9th Battalion won. As a result, he was awarded a particularly impressive Army Football medal.
