Hubert Sutton was born in Streatham, London and joined the 1st/1st Surrey Yeomanry at West Croydon, Clapham in 1914. He received the service number 1757 and became a member of C Squadron, who were attached to the 29th Division in Warwickshire January 1915. Herbert Sutton was to see service in the Dardanelles Campaign at Gallipoli. The C Squadron Surrey Yeomanry embarked at Avonmouth on 17th March and arrived in Alexandria on 2nd April, 1915. They were transferred to Imbros on 26th June where they initially became troops at General Headquarters. During this period Herbert Sutton was promoted to Lance Corporal and it was with this rank that he was killed in action at Gallipoli on the 21st August, 1915.
1757 Lance Corporal Herbert Sutton of the Surrey Yeomanry was laid to rest at Pieta Military Cemetery in Malta. The memorial plaque retains its original dark brown colour and is in excellent condition with an even patina. On the rear of the plaque the following words are engraved in beautifully running contemporary script -
