John A. Dawson enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment and arrived in France on 09/12/1915.  

The 2nd Battalion later saw action on the Somme in 1916, Ypres and Passchendale in 1917 and St. Quentin and Villiers Bretonneux in 1918. He was transferred to the Labour Corps. at some time during his service possibly due to wounds received in action with the West Yorkshire Regiment.
