1914 Star Trio to 2677 L. Cpl. J.J. Colby of the Northumberland Fusiliers W.I.A. 1917

James Joseph Colby joined the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on 3rd July 1909. He arrived in  France with his battalion on the 23rd of October 1914. His first action was at 1st Ypres Neuve Chapelle on 29th October 1914. Following this Cpl. J.J. Colby participated in the First Battle of Bellewaarde and Hooge, 1915, but during the build up to the Second Attack on Bellewaarde, he was wounded on 8th September 1915 and was listed as being entitled to a wound stripe.

During 1916, the 1st Battalion joined the 9th Brigade of the 3rd Division and saw heavy fighting on the Somme. The 1st Battalion took part in the Battle of Bazentin Ridge on 14th July 1916, when Bazentin-le-Grand was captured. Following this the Battalion took part in the attacks on Delville Wood on 23rd July 1916 and Guillemont on 18th August, 1916.

In 1917Cpl. Colby was transferred to the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment and received the new service number 46856. L. Cpl Colby’s first action with the West Yorks. Regt. was in the Battle of Cambrai in December 1917, when he was severely wounded. As a result of his wounds, James Joseph Colby was discharged on 4th January 1918.

The 1914 Star Trio is sold with copies of MIC and SWB documents, which record that Cpl. Colby’s discharge was as a result of wounds.
