14th Century Heraldic Horse Pendant Depicting a Rampant Lion       SOLD

This 14th century shield-shaped heraldic pendant depicts a rampant lion with twin tails on a blue background. Approximately 20% of the blue enamelling on the background remains. The pendant retains a complete loop and is in very good overall condition. It measures 42 mm in length (including the loop) and 32 mm in with.

On investigation, it appears that the heraldic device featured on the pendant (azure lion rampant with twin tails) belongs to the Breouse family, who were the Earls of Glamorgan, an established family in Lewes, Sussex. An almost identical example is shown in Medieval Artefacts by Nigel Mills, NM 187 P. 67.
