Sutlej 1845-46 Medal Sobraon to Pte. E. Brown of the 10th Regiment    SOLD

Edward Brown was born in the Parish of Wetheringset near the town of Eye in Suffolk. He was a labourer by trade before he attested at the age of 18 for the 38th Foot in 1836, before joining the 10th (Lincoln) Regiment in 1842. He was promoted to corporal in 1843, but reduced to private in the same year. During the Sikh War the Lincolns were based at Meerut before moving to Sobraon on the 8th February 1846. The 10th Regiment was part of Major General Sir Robert Dick's Division and became part of Brigadier Hick's Brigade.

On the 10th of February, Pte. Edward Brown, along with the 10th Regiment, was in the front-line on the British left and was heavily involved in the Battle of Sobraon. The 10th Regiment received severe casualties from the Sikh batteries, but were successful in breaking the Sikh defenses. The heavy casualties amounted to 30 killed and 103 wounded, out of an initial strength of 778.

1746 Pte. Edward Brown was also involved in the siege and attacks against the Sikh city of Multan during 1848 and the Battle of Gujerat during the Second Sikh War. He therefore, earned the Second Sikh War Medal of 1848-49 with the Mooltan and Goojerat clasps. Altogether Edward Brown served 10 years and 2 months in India and was finally discharged due to ill health (hepatitis) on the 9th August 1853, having served a total of over 16 years with the colours.

The medal is sold with copies of service documents, which state Pte. Edward Brown's full involvement during the 1st Sikh Wars at the Battle of Sobraon and the 2nd Sikh Wars at the Battles of Multan and Gujerat.
