Indian Mutiny Medal, 1 Bar Delhi D.O.W. to Pte. James Biss of the 1st Battalion 8th Regiment

Condition - E.F.

During  June, July and August of 1857 , Pte. James Biss took part in the Siege of Delhi with the King's Regiment. The Regiment initially comprised of 21 officers and 350 other ranks. On July 9th the Regiment took part in an attack against the rebels and dislodged them from a thickly wooded garden on the extreme British right. On the 23rd of July the 8th Regt. beat back a strong sortie from Delhi on the British besieging position. Finally, with regard to James Biss, on the 22nd of August a determined attack was made by the rebels against a picquet of the 8th Rgt., who were holding Hindu Rao's House. During this action James Biss was mortally wounded and died of his wounds on the same day.

The overall losses of the 8th Rgt. were particularly severe being 44 killed and 136 wounded.

The medal is sold with a copy of the casualty page from the Casualty Roll for the Indian Mutiny 1857-59 by I.T. Tavender.
