India General Service Medal 1908-35, 1 Clasp Afghanistan North West Frontier 1919 to 8720 Pte. H. Wyatt 2nd Battalion Somerset L.I.

Condition - E.F.    SOLD

Following WWI, Afghanistan's North West Frontier tribes assumed Britain had been seriously weakened as a military force. As a result, the Afghans made two major attacks on the British position in and around the Khyber Pass. Fourteen British regiments including the 2nd Battalion Somerset Light Infantry were sent to engage the Afghan and tribal forces. The campaign lasted from the 6th May to the 8th August, 1919. There was such severe fighting that it became known as the Third Afghan War.

During the conflict the British and Indian forces sustained 236 killed and 615 wounded, whilst the Afghan losses amounted to 1000 killed.
