Egypt Medal Undated 2-Clasps Suakin 1885 and Tofrek to 683 Pte. G. Brewer of the 1/Royal Berkshire Regt. SOLD
Pte.G. Brewer of the 1/ Royal Berkshire Regiment took part in the Suakin Campaign of 1885 against Osman Digna's Dervish Forces in the Sudan. The Regiment was part of Lieutenant General, Sir Gerald Graham's force, which arrived in Suakin on the 12th March 1885. On the 20th March, the Berkshires took part in the Battle of Hasin. Here the Berkshires together with the Marines charged a ridge and dislodged the Arabs from their position with little loss.
However, on the 20th March the Berkshires, Marines and two squadrons of 5th Lancers advanced to Tofrek, where the Infantry began to build a defensive zereba. Before this was completed, the Dervish army of 5000, suddenly charged the Bekshires and the British troops became involved in savage hand to hand fighting. Although the Dervishes were defeated, the Berkshire casualties were severe, totalling 21 killed and 30 wounded. Due to the regiment's bravery at Tofrek, it was given the prefix Royal by Queen Victoria. There were no further engagements in this expedition and by 3rd April 1885, the campaign came to a close.
This is a particularly high quality medal with no pitting whatsoever, to a regiment which served with distinction in a major battle.
