Egypt 1882 1 Clasp Tel-el-Kebir to 154 Pte. W. Halbin of the 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment    SOLD

Condition - G.V.F. (no pitting)

Pte. Halbin together with the 2/York and Lancaster Regiment joined  Sir Garnet Wolsey's British Egyptian expeditionary force in July 1882 and the Regiment became part of General Graham's Brigade within the 1st Division. In August General Graham's Brigade of 2000 men was sent as the advanced force to hold the village of Kassissin opposite Tel-El-Kebir. On the way the 2/York and Lancasters brushed aside a larger Egyptian force at Mahuta before buiding entrenchments north of Kassassin. The Egyptians attacked the British positions on 28th August 1882 and after heavy fighting the enemy withdrew. The 2/York and Lancasters lost 1 man killed and 21 wounded.

The Egyptians remained in their formidable defensive positions at Tel-El-Kebir and on 12th September 1882, the British troops attacked and utterly defeated them. Casualties for the 2nd Yorks. and Lancaster Regiment on this occasion were 12 wounded.

This is an interesting medal to a recipient who was involved in 1 minor and 2 major battles during the campaign in Egypt. The Regiment's overall casualties were 2 killed and 25 wounded out of a complement of 726 men.
