Pte. Martin saw action with the 67th Foot in Afghanistan from September 1879. The 67th Foot joined the First Infantry Brigade of General Sir Frederick Robert's Kabul Field Force.
The 67th Regiment's first engagement took place on the 10th November 1879 at Doaba where losses amounted to 2 killed and 6 wounded.
The 1st Brigade entered Kabul on 10th December and threw up defensive fortifications at Sharpur just outside the city. The British forces were besieged here throughout December culminating in the Afghan's major unsuccessful assault on 23rd December 1879.
Following this battle, the 67th Foot remained as part of the Kabul garrison throughout 1880 until the end of the Afghan War in September 1880. During the garrison duty the 67th Regiment sustained losses amounting to 3 killed and 11 wounded. During the Afghan War, the overall casualties of the 67th Foot amounted to 9 killed and 16 wounded.
